Shivratri is a major festival in Hinduism. It is a solemn occasion that marks a remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life and the world. It is marked by fasting, doing yoga and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty and non-injury to others.Legend has it that the occasion celebrates the marriage of Shiv with Parvati, his consort. Shivratri takes place on the 13th night of the waning month, the 14th day of the month of Phalguna.
